Email message from concerned citizen

Salaam to all,

The handling of the sage regarding the savage murder of Mr Hashim Idris, who is a decorated public servant, is a real test for Harari Regional and Federal governments to their degree of their commitments to fight corruption and crime. Indeed, it is a test for the conscience of all Ethiopians who would like to see their country peaceful, prosperous and free from corruptions.

In fact, there are many practical examples in which people who have been involved with corruption in Ethiopia and even in Harar are languishing in prisons for years.  Mr Hashim who is a dedicated public servant, an honest, loyal and vocal critic of corruption has been brutally murdered in the heart of Harar by those criminals well known to the regional administration – planned and premeditated, because he was seen as a threat to their corruption scandals. The extend the crime for planned, premeditated and brutal killing of dedicated public servant in broad day light, in the centre of the town, in public with the objective of promoting corruption in the land does not have a limit. The full force of the law must be applied.

Gessi Hashim Idris is our icon. His death has sent shock waves in the heart of every Hararis and many other Ethiopians and their organisations around the globe. This incident marks one of the darkest days in our history after Chelonquo. Brother Hashim will never be forgotten in our hearts and homes. His memories live with us for ever. If justice isn't done immediately, no dedicated public servant will ever be safe in Harar.  The question will then be who will be next.   We will galvanise individuals and associations to step up international pressures on the Ethiopian government to see this crime be dealt with the full force of the law so that people in Harar live and work without being intimidated.

Salahadin Khairo
